Overview
DNS records control how your domain connects to services like websites and email. Common records include A records, CNAME records, MX records, TXT records, and more.
Where You Should Make DNS Changes
The correct place depends on who is actively handling your DNS. If your nameservers point to Cloudflare, make the changes in Cloudflare. If your nameservers point to your hosting nameservers, manage the records in your hosting DNS tools.
Common DNS Records
- A record for a root domain or hostname pointing to an IP address
- CNAME record for one hostname pointing to another hostname
- MX record for inbound email delivery
- TXT record for SPF, DKIM, DMARC, or verification
Tips to Avoid Problems
- Do not delete existing mail records unless you are sure they are no longer needed
- Double check spelling because one wrong character can break a service
- If you are moving a live site, plan the changes so email and website traffic stay aligned
